AI bookkeeping software compared: Switchbooks, Kick and Digits

Updated

Switchbooks, Kick and Digits are AI bookkeeping software for US small businesses. Switchbooks has the lowest paid price, $25 a month per company (Kick is free for one company with up to 250 transactions a year). Switchbooks includes combined reports across companies, and its AI bookkeeper, Switch, works in a chat inside the app, while ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor and Grok Bot can work on the same books. Digits ($65 or $100 a month, with a $250 plan coming soon) posts most transactions automatically and includes invoicing and bill pay. Kick (a free plan, then $40 to $300 a month) adds an accrual ledger, classes, departments and locations on Plus, and on its top plan, consolidation with intercompany eliminations.

All three are for US businesses in US dollars, and none runs payroll or files taxes.

Switchbooks fits if

  • You want the lowest paid price for a full AI bookkeeper: $25 a month per company, every Switchbooks feature on one plan.
  • You run several companies and want combined reports without paying for a higher plan.
  • You want to do your books by chatting: with Switch in the app, or with ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor or Grok Bot connected to your books.
  • Your bookkeeping is mostly bank and card activity.

Kick fits if

  • You need cash and accrual books side by side, or consolidation with intercompany eliminations.
  • Your books fit Kick's free plan: up to 250 transactions a year on its pricing page, and its help docs add a $25,000 yearly limit on business expenses.
  • Payroll runs in Gusto and you want it split into wages, taxes and benefits automatically.

Digits fits if

  • You want transactions posted in the background without asking.
  • You want invoicing and bill pay in the same system as the books.
  • Payroll runs in one of about 20 providers Digits syncs, such as ADP, Paychex or Justworks (Kick syncs only Gusto).

Switchbooks facts

  • Price: $25 a month per company. One plan with every feature. No per-user fee, no setup fee and no annual contract.
  • Free trial: 10 days for each new company, with no credit card. Nothing is charged when the trial ends; the company is locked until someone subscribes.
  • How transactions get posted: New transactions arrive in To Review with a suggested category and payee. A transfer between two of your own accounts, such as a credit card payment, is linked and posted on its own once both sides arrive and can only match each other. Switch posts the rest when you ask ("Do my books"), or every week if you turn on the weekly books check with Do the work too, and rules you set can post matching transactions on their own. When you connect the first bank of a new company from the Switchbooks chat, Switch goes through the first transactions by himself, posts what he is sure of and emails you his questions.
  • Hands-off option: Turn on the weekly books check and its Do the work too option, and every week Switch posts what he is sure of, matches transfers, reconciles to the bank statements Switchbooks has and leaves a short note when he changed or found something new. Both settings are off until you turn them on. On a schedule he never deletes, merges or imports anything, and sends no email except his notes, to team members who choose email.
  • What Switch does: Categorizes and posts transactions, matches transfers between your own accounts, reconciles accounts to bank statements, books journal entries, makes categorization rules, answers questions from your books and can undo most of his own changes.
  • Several companies: One login for any number of companies, each with its own books and its own $25 subscription. Combined Profit and Loss, Balance Sheet and Cash Flow across companies are included at no extra cost.
  • AI assistants: Switchbooks also works inside ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor, Grok Bot (xAI's agent) and Grok chat (as a custom connector), and in any MCP client at https://app.switchbooks.ai/api/mcp. Switchbooks charges nothing extra for this.
  • Moving from QuickBooks: Import three CSV exports from QuickBooks Online: the Vendor Contact List, the Account List and the Journal report. QuickBooks Desktop company files (.qbw) and backups are not supported.
  • Not included: Running payroll (Switch books your payroll provider's register as a journal entry), invoicing and accounts receivable, bills and bill pay, inventory, sales tax filing, 1099 filing, multiple currencies and time tracking.
  • Who makes it: Switch Holdings, LLC. The founder, Ryland Beard, grew a bookkeeping firm, Ledge Accounting, to 40 people before building Switchbooks.

Questions

Which should I pick: Switchbooks, Kick or Digits?

Pick Switchbooks for the lowest paid price, combined reports across companies, and an AI bookkeeper you talk to in the app, with the same books open to ChatGPT and Claude. Pick Kick for cash and accrual ledgers side by side or consolidation with intercompany eliminations, or for its free plan if you have up to 250 transactions a year. Pick Digits for hands-off posting with invoicing and bill pay in the same system.

Which is cheapest: Switchbooks, Kick or Digits?

For books with more than 250 transactions a year, Switchbooks, at $25 a month per company with every feature and no annual contract. Kick's free plan costs nothing up to 250 transactions a year, and its paid plans start at $40 a month billed yearly. Digits starts at $65 a month with no free plan.

Which is best for several companies?

For combined reports at the lowest cost, Switchbooks: $25 per company with combined Profit and Loss, Balance Sheet and Cash Flow included (three companies are $75 a month). Combined reports add the companies together; they do not remove transactions between your own companies (intercompany eliminations). For consolidation with eliminations, Kick's Advanced plan, from $300 a month (each extra entity is $50 a month once it passes 250 transactions; Kick's help docs say Advanced covers up to five entities). Digits bills each business separately and has no consolidated reports.

Which is the most automatic?

Digits posts high-confidence transactions on its own as they arrive, and Kick categorizes most transactions automatically. In Switchbooks, Switch posts when you ask, and auto-post rules post their matches. Transfers between your own accounts post once both sides arrive and can only match each other. When you connect a new company's first bank from the Switchbooks chat, Switch goes through its first transactions on his own, and with the weekly books check and Do the work too turned on, he posts every week.

Which works with ChatGPT and Claude?

All three. Switchbooks connects to ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor and Grok Bot on every company and can make changes. Kick connects on paid plans and is read-only until you allow writes. Digits' connection is free on every plan with read and write tools.

Which has invoicing and bill pay?

Digits includes both on every plan. Kick includes invoicing on every plan with no extra Kick fees, and its bill pay works only through a connected Ramp or BILL account. Switchbooks has neither; it keeps the books from your bank and card activity.

Can I move from QuickBooks Online to each of them?

Switchbooks and Digits, yes. Switchbooks imports three CSV exports (vendors, chart of accounts and journal history). Digits migrates at signup, including balances, classes, vendors and customers. Kick's direct QuickBooks Online move (chart of accounts, full general ledger, customers and vendors) is in beta for select accounting firms.

Which makes moving from QuickBooks Online easiest?

Digits, which brings over the chart of accounts, transactions, balances, classes, vendors and customers at signup. Kick's direct move is in beta for select accounting firms. Switchbooks imports three QuickBooks Online CSV exports and does not take QuickBooks Desktop files.

Do any of them run payroll or file taxes?

No. Each records payroll from a provider: Switchbooks from a payroll register, Kick by syncing Gusto, and Digits by syncing about 20 providers. None files tax returns; a CPA or tax preparer still does that.

Which one is SOC 2 certified?

Kick and Digits say they hold SOC 2 Type II. Switchbooks does not hold a SOC 2 certification; bank sign-ins happen on Plaid's own page, Switchbooks only reads bank data and cannot move money, and its security page (switchbooks.ai/security) lists the controls in place.
