About switchbooks
Where it started
I'm Ryland. In 2019, I started Ledge Accounting — a bookkeeping firm that manages the books for hundreds of small businesses. I used QuickBooks exclusively. Every day, for every client.
After years of that, I knew exactly what worked and what didn't. The upsells, the confusing pricing tiers, the cluttered interface, the outdated software — I lived with all of it. I watched small business owners struggle with tools that were never built for them. I watched them pay more for features that should have been standard. I watched them give up on understanding their own finances because the software made it too hard.
So we built switchbooks. Not as a side project — as the product I wished existed for my own clients. Not a better tool. An autonomous one. It worked so well that we decided to open it up to everyone.
Why switchbooks exists
QuickBooks tries to be everything for everyone. It bolts on payroll, invoicing, inventory, project management, time tracking — features that bloat the interface and drive up the price. Then they gate the useful stuff behind premium tiers.
We took the opposite approach. switchbooks is autonomous bookkeeping. An agent that categorizes your transactions, generates your reports, and manages your books. No fluff, no upsells, no features you'll never touch.
The goal isn't to replace your entire back office. It's to make bookkeeping something that happens on its own.
What makes switchbooks different
Other software gives you tools. switchbooks gives you an agent.
Autonomous from day one
Transactions categorize themselves. The agent learns from your corrections and applies rules. Ask questions in plain English and get real answers — not a chatbot stapled onto a legacy product.
One price, everything included
$25/month for our first 1,000 users. Locked in forever. Regular price will be $100/month. Every feature included.
Fast by default
Reports generate in seconds. Bank transactions sync automatically. No waiting, no manual refreshes, no batch processing.
No legacy bloat
Built with modern technology for modern workflows. No features you'll never use cluttering your interface.
Who switchbooks is for
switchbooks is for anyone who wants their books done, not just organized.
Small business owners
Connect your bank. The agent handles your books from there. No bookkeeper needed, no software to learn.
Freelancers and solopreneurs
Income, expenses, tax-ready reports. The agent tracks it all. You focus on your work.
Accountants and bookkeepers
Manage multiple clients from one dashboard. The agent categorizes autonomously — you focus on advisory, not data entry.
How we build
Never automate a broken process. That's the rule. Before we write a single line of code, every feature goes through three steps:
Simplify the process
Strip it down to the fewest possible steps. Question every requirement. If a step doesn't directly help the business owner understand their finances, it gets cut. Most bookkeeping software has 10 steps where 3 would do. We start by deleting the other 7.
Get it right
Once the process is simple, make it accurate and reliable. The data model has to be clean. The user experience has to be intuitive. The feedback loops have to work — so when you correct a categorization, the system actually learns from it. Nothing gets automated until the foundation is solid.
Then automate it
Only after a process is simple and correct do we make it autonomous. That's why switchbooks works — it's not automating a mess. Transactions categorize themselves. Reports generate instantly. Rules learn from your corrections. The repetitive work disappears because the foundation was built to support it.
