As of October 20, 2026. Intuit Connect runs October 26 to 28, where last year's agents were announced, so names and plans may change. I will update this post after it.
QuickBooks' AI agents are a real improvement on the easy half of bookkeeping, and they are not a bookkeeper. The Accounting agent pairs transfers, explains its matches, and collects the rows it is sure about into a Ready to post list you approve in one click. On the bank feed, every category and every match still waits for that click. The exceptions are payroll direct deposits, payroll tax payments and Bill Pay matches, which post on their own, and a Books Upkeep service on Advanced that pairs the AI with Intuit's expert review. The agent starts at Essentials, $85 a month. AI reconciliation starts at Plus, $140. If your question is whether you can stop sorting transactions, the answer with QuickBooks is not yet.
I used QuickBooks Online every working day for about eight years while growing a bookkeeping firm to forty people, and I now build Switchbooks, so weigh what follows with that in mind. I did not run a trial file. What is here comes from Intuit's help articles and pricing page, and from bookkeepers who work in the new feed every day.
What the Accounting agent does well
Transfers pair. The hosts of a QuickBooks accountants podcast say the new feed finds both sides of a transfer between your own accounts and shows them together. Matches come with a reason, and one deposit can match several invoices. Ready to post gathers the rows it is confident about so you approve them as a batch. You can upload a PDF statement instead of a CSV. On Plus and above, reconciliation shows the statement and the books side by side, and anomaly detection flags duplicates and likely miscategorizations with a suggested cause.
A bookkeeping firm that works in QuickBooks daily wrote in September 2026 that the agent is reliable on vendors that repeat with consistent descriptions and good at surfacing duplicate charges. The podcast hosts, after asking whether it was mostly marketing, put it at mostly real: one said 90% AI and 10% marketing, the other a bit of both.
What still waits for your click
Intuit built the agent so you approve everything on the bank feed. Its accountant FAQ says every category and matching suggestion has to be reviewed and approved before a transaction posts. Its Ready to post help article, updated this month, adds the rest: you select Post, any field the AI is unsure about is held for review, anything above an amount threshold you set is never marked ready, and the AI never overrides your bank rules.
That is a defensible choice, and it is why the agent is not a bookkeeper. You still read every row; the rows just arrive pre-sorted.
The same bookkeeping firm says these rows still need a person: ambiguous charges, reconciliation differences, owner draws, loans, transfers between related companies, district sales tax, what is deductible, and job cost coding. A QuickBooks-sponsored tutorial from July 2026 added that the agent does not split a transaction across categories and watches the category more than the vendor. A solo bookkeeper's newsletter made the sharpest point in September 2026: the risk is not that the AI posts without you, it is that it learns your old mistakes. It is most confident where the past is most consistent, including where the past was consistently wrong.
The ten-transaction sample in my ChatGPT post has the usual suspects: a card payment, a savings transfer, a Square charge that could be three things, a check with no payee. Those rows wait for you in any system that suggests rather than decides.
One more number. Essentials at $85 or Plus at $140 buys a sorted queue, not a finished month; your time on the queue is the rest of the price. Switchbooks is $25, and across the clients we have moved so far the average saving is $409 a month between software and bookkeeping fees.
Does QuickBooks do the bookkeeping automatically?
For sorting the bank feed, no. For a short named list, yes.
Intuit's Accounting AI help article describes an Auto-post feature that posts on its own for three things: payroll direct deposits, payroll tax payments and Bill Pay matches, at Essentials and up. On Advanced, a Books Upkeep service announced in August 2026 resolves high-confidence transactions under rules you set and surfaces only the exceptions. Intuit's accountant blog describes it as the AI plus an expert review, a service rather than a setting.
Can you turn the AI off? Intuit's support team said on the community forum in September 2025 that there is no setting that disables all of it. The opt-outs closed in stages: Intuit's accountant blog says clients opted out of the new interface were moved back by the end of September 2025, and a QuickBooks Team notice relayed by the trade press said the AI bank feed would become the standard on May 8, 2026, with the temporary opt-out ending that day.
None of this is a scandal; it is a design choice. Switchbooks made the other one: Elliott does the work when you ask, and anything he does can be undone from the chat.
Which AI you get on which plan
Prices are Intuit's list prices, read on its pricing page on October 20, 2026; there is also a Free plan at $0. Every paid tier shows 50% off for three months, so the advertised $19 is Simple Start's $38 at half price. Essentials, Plus and Advanced went up on August 1, 2026, from $75, $115 and $275 according to the price trackers.
| Plan | Bookkeeping AI | AI reconciliation | Who clicks Post | Turn AI off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Simple Start, $38 | Suggestions, AI chat (beta), no agents | None | You, row by row | No setting, per Intuit |
| Essentials, $85 | Accounting AI, Ready to post, Payments AI | None | You, in batches* | No setting, per Intuit |
| Plus, $140 | Adds Customer AI, Sales Tax AI | AI reconciliation, anomaly flags | You, in batches* | No setting, per Intuit |
| Advanced, $340 | Adds Finance AI, Project Management AI, Books Upkeep** | Yes, plus quality checks | You, except Books Upkeep rules* | No setting, per Intuit |
| Switchbooks, $25 | Elliott categorizes, posts, matches transfers | Preview you approve | Elliott, undo from chat | Acts when asked; read-only option |
* Auto-post: payroll direct deposits, payroll tax payments and Bill Pay matches, Essentials and up, per Intuit's help article.
** Books Upkeep is the AI plus Intuit's expert review service, Advanced only, rolling out since August 2026.
Intuit's own page is plain: "AI agents aren't included in Simple Start." Essentials is where the Accounting agent, Ready to post and requests for missing information begin.
Three names on one screen: which is which
The names confuse people, and fairly: a QuickBooks explainer noted in September 2026 that three AI labels can sit on one page. They are layers, not one product renamed three times.
- The chat box is Intuit Assist. Announced in 2023, it launched for QuickBooks on November 20, 2024, drafting invoices, bills and reminders for the owner to review.
- The agents sit under it. Intuit announced the Accounting, Payments, Finance and Customer agents on July 1, 2025, with Payroll and Sales Tax following on October 28, 2025, when the Project Management agent, which had shipped in between, was also updated.
- Intuit Intelligence is the umbrella over all of it, announced the same day, with a chat that runs tasks across the agents.
Intuit's current US pages mostly say Accounting AI, Payments AI and so on under the Intuit Intelligence heading, while the help articles still say Accounting Agent and Intuit Assist appears only in a homepage footnote.
The other agents, one paragraph each
Payments AI. Essentials and up. It drafts invoice reminders and suggests late fees and recurring invoices; you review and send. Paid four days faster is a vendor claim, footnoted to Intuit Assist customers from March 2025 to March 2026.
Customer AI. Customer Hub, a lightweight CRM, is in most plans; lead management with the agent is Plus and Advanced. It scans Gmail and Outlook for leads and drafts follow-ups. Four leads a week is a vendor claim.
Finance AI. Advanced only. It drafts month-end summaries and flags KPI risks for you to review. Intuit's disclosure, last updated February 2026, said it was not available with multi-currency on.
Project Management AI. Advanced only, labeled beta on Intuit's FAQ. Upload a contract and it drafts the project; you review before saving.
Payroll Agent. Essentials and up, with a QuickBooks Online Payroll subscription. Intuit's October 2025 wording was a payroll draft sent by text for you to approve; its May 2026 release says it runs payroll on the owner's behalf.
Sales Tax AI. Plus and up since October 28, 2025. It flags problems before you file.
Business Tax AI. In beta since February 2026, finding missed deductions. The beta notice said Essentials and up; the pricing page now lists deduction finding at Simple Start and Business Tax AI quarterly estimates at Essentials, so the placement is moving.
Marketing Agent. Announced in July 2025 for Mailchimp. I could not find a launch notice as of October 20, 2026.
Intuit's numbers, read with the footnotes
Intuit publishes time savings; they are vendor claims, not tests, and the footnotes are worth a look.
- Up to 12 hours a month, from the July 2025 announcement; the footnote says 45% of customers reported that, in an Intuit-commissioned survey from April 2025.
- 13 hours saved each month on average, on the current homepage, from an Intuit-commissioned survey of US customers as of September 2025.
- 76% less manual work, on Intuit's Australian accountant page, footnoted to US users with no survey date or sample size. I did not find it on the US pages I checked.
Intuit itself says, on its homepage and in its August 2026 release, that Intuit Intelligence can make mistakes.
What each one has that the other does not
QuickBooks has payroll, invoicing, a CRM in Customer Hub, and inventory, and every CPA knows it. Switchbooks has none of those. I said in the QuickBooks comparison that I recommended Gusto for payroll even to QuickBooks clients, because its payroll entries often did not tie to what actually ran. If your business lives inside those features, QuickBooks has them and we do not.
Switchbooks has an agent that does the whole job. Elliott is on every page. Tell him to do the books and he categorizes, posts, matches the transfers, reconciles each account from a preview you approve, and asks you about the rows he cannot place. Anything he does can be undone from the chat. Bank feeds come through Plaid. The instruction is short:
Post everything in To Review that matches a rule, match the transfers, and list what you were unsure about.
The same tools work from ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor, Grok Bot or any MCP client. A connected assistant reads the books, and changes them only if you tick Allow bookkeeping changes when you connect. None of them can sign in to a bank, move money, invite or remove people, share a report, change billing or delete the company. It is $25 a month per company, every feature, 10-day free trial, no card.
Who should stay, and who should try the other way
Stay on QuickBooks if you run payroll or invoicing inside it, if you track inventory, if your accountant will not work in anything else, or if you are on Advanced and want the reviewed Books Upkeep service or Finance AI. A one-person Simple Start user with few transactions can stay; a Simple Start user who wants the sorting done should try Switchbooks, since Essentials at $85 is the first tier with the agent.
Try Switchbooks if you want the sorting done rather than approved, if you own more than one company, or if you would rather work from ChatGPT or Claude.
Switching is the easy part: pick a date, import QuickBooks through that date, connect your banks from that date forward, and let Elliott reconcile. QuickBooks stays intact; the steps are on the migration page.
Questions people ask
Is the Accounting agent included in QuickBooks Simple Start?
No. Intuit's own page says AI agents are not included in Simple Start. Essentials at $85 a month is the first tier with the agent, and AI reconciliation starts at Plus, $140.
Does QuickBooks AI post transactions without my approval?
On the bank feed, no; you review and click Post. The documented exceptions are Auto-post, for payroll direct deposits, payroll tax payments and Bill Pay matches, and the Books Upkeep service on Advanced, which pairs your rules with Intuit's expert review.
Can I turn off the AI in QuickBooks Online?
Intuit's support team said on the community forum in September 2025 that there is no setting that disables all of it. The opt-out from the new interface ended that month, and a QuickBooks Team notice said the AI bank feed opt-out would end on May 8, 2026.
Does QuickBooks AI reconcile my bank accounts?
At Plus and up, per Intuit's help article. It lines up the statement and the books and suggests matches, and you confirm the differences.
Does QuickBooks AI learn from my corrections?
Intuit's team said on the community forum in December 2025 that there is no way to train the matching AI. Bookkeepers report that it learns from the history in your file, old mistakes included.
Do I still need a bookkeeper if I use QuickBooks with the AI agents?
For the judgment calls, yes: owner draws, loans, transfers between related companies and what is deductible. The alternative is an agent that asks you about those rows, which is how Elliott works in Switchbooks.
If you would rather have the sorting done than approve it row by row, start a free trial, connect a bank and ask Elliott what is sitting in To Review. In ChatGPT, install the plugin; for any other assistant, follow the connect tutorial.
